The Essex Green are Jeff Baron, Sasha Bell and Chris Ziter. The band formed around 1997 along with
Mike Barrett on bass and Tim Barnes on drums. Their first release was a 7" split single with
The Sixth Great Lake (which is actually a band composed of the same members).
The first album, Everything Is Green, was released by Kindercore Records in October 1999. The album
was recorded over the spring and summer 1999 at both at Studio 45 in Hartford, CT and at Brooklyn's Marlborough
Farms. This was followed by 5 Song E.P. on Elephant 6 (E6-019). Julia Rydholm joined the band around the time
these were recorded.
The band also self-released their own Brooklyn Basement Tapes, of which there have been 2 volumes
so far. These tapes include demo, working and live versions of new and previously released songs.
4 songs were released in September 2000 as part of the Happy Happy Birthday To Me singles
club; the single was the installment for April 2000 (each in a unique hand-made sleeve sporting photographs).
The five song E.P. sold out of its original pressing and was re-released on CD with eight bonus tracks
from 7"s and compilations.
The long awaited second album entitled The Long Goodbye was released by Merge Records in May 2003.
